The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has formed an expert committee to propel the development of generative AI technology. The initiative aims to establish a support scheme for companies developing competitive base models in the fast-evolving field of generative AI. This advanced technology is predicted to have a transformative impact on industrial activities and daily life, tackling social issues like improving information accessibility, addressing labor shortages, and boosting productivity.
Given the global advancement in the development of fundamental models, the core technology of generative AI, it is crucial for Japan to ensure its development capability. The newly created committee is a strategic step in that direction.
The committee’s initial meeting on July 21 focused on formulating an approach to expediting generative AI development. The strategy includes procuring crucial computational resources in bulk, given the intense pace of competition in this field, and providing them to support the development of base models in Japan. The support targets will be refined progressively based on short development cycles and their results, as predicting the winning models and systems in advance can be challenging.
METI plans to continue refining its strategy to accelerate the development of generative AI, factoring in discussions from the expert meetings.
